About the System

Traditional Tile Appearance Formed in Steel

Metal tile roofing uses profiled steel panels shaped into repeating courses that resemble traditional roof tile. The panels cover a larger area than individual tiles while creating a detailed roof surface suited to many residential architectural styles.

The finished panels are only one part of the system. Performance depends on the roof deck or supporting strapping, separation materials, fasteners, valleys, eave details, walls, penetrations, ridges and controlled water drainage.

Metal tile can be considered for new construction, complete roof replacement and, where the existing roof qualifies, installation over shingles using a specified strapping or separation approach.

Profiles & Options

Metal Tile Selected for the Roof Design

Metal tile panels are available in different wave patterns, course dimensions, colours, metal thicknesses and factory-applied finishes. Final product availability depends on the selected supplier and project requirements.

Traditional Tile-Inspired Profiles

Formed panel courses create the curved or stepped appearance associated with clay or concrete tile while maintaining the continuous coverage of a sheet-metal panel.

Typical applications

Homes with traditional exterior design, prominent sloped roofs, cottages, and residential additions requiring coordinated appearance.

Low-Profile Tile Patterns

Some profiles use a more restrained tile shape for homes where the client wants visible texture without a deeply curved roof surface.

Typical applications

Contemporary-traditional homes, renovations, moderately complex roof geometry, and coordinated exterior upgrades.

Gauge and Finish Options

For applicable profiles, ARKSTRUX currently uses 26-gauge prefinished steel as the preliminary residential planning option. Other gauges, substrates or coatings may be available depending on the selected product, supplier, building exposure and project specifications. Gauge alone does not determine the performance of the complete roof assembly.

Colour and Surface Finish

Factory-applied finishes are available in a range of colours. Actual colour, gloss, texture, coating warranty and availability must be confirmed from the selected material source before ordering.

Coordinated Panels, Support and Metal Details

Roof Deck and Existing Conditions

The deck and supporting structure must be suitable for the selected installation approach. A complete tear-off allows the exposed deck to be reviewed before new materials are installed.

Underlayment or Separation Layer

The specified protective layer separates the roof covering from the deck or existing materials and provides secondary protection within the complete assembly.

Strapping or Supporting Substrate

Depending on the selected system, panels may be installed over a prepared deck or an approved strapping arrangement. Strapping layout and fastening must correspond to the panel and project conditions.

Valleys and Pre-Panel Flashings

Valleys, eave starters and other hidden preparatory details are installed before the field panels so water can be directed through controlled drainage paths.

Formed Metal Tile Panels

Panels are aligned in repeating courses and secured using the fastening method specified for the system. Panel layout must account for roof dimensions, pattern alignment and transitions.

Fasteners and Sealing Components

Fastener type, placement and sealing components depend on the selected panel. Metal tile products may use exposed, partially concealed or concealed attachment details. Use only the fastening method and compatible components specified for the selected system.

Ridges, Hips and Gable Details

Formed caps and edge components complete the upper and side transitions after the main panel areas are installed.

Walls, Chimneys and Penetrations

Custom flashings integrate the panels with walls, chimneys, plumbing vents, skylights and other project-specific conditions.

Snow Retention and Drainage

Metal surfaces can release snow and ice suddenly. Snow retention may be recommended above entrances, walkways, driveways and lower roof areas according to the building conditions.

New Construction

Installation Over Existing Shingles

In suitable conditions, metal tile may be installed over an existing shingle roof using an approved strapping or separation system.

Not every roof qualifies for an overlay installation. The final approach is confirmed after existing conditions and project requirements are reviewed.

No. Standing seam uses continuous panels connected by raised vertical seams with concealed field fasteners. Metal tile uses formed repeating tile patterns and a different fastening and flashing system.

In suitable conditions, yes. An approved strapping or separation system may allow installation over existing shingles. The roof and supporting structure must be reviewed before this method is confirmed.

It depends on the product. Metal tile systems are available with exposed, partially concealed and concealed fastening details. ARKSTRUX confirms the attachment method only after a specific panel has been selected. Fasteners, closures and flashings must follow that product's installation requirements.

Perceived sound depends on the complete building assembly. A roof installed over a solid deck, underlayment, attic space and insulation generally manages sound differently from an uninsulated metal panel installed over an open structure.

Metal tile can perform effectively in snow, rain and freeze-thaw conditions when the complete assembly, flashings, ventilation and drainage are properly coordinated. Snow may slide from metal surfaces, so retention should be considered where falling snow could create a hazard.

For applicable profiles, the current ARKSTRUX planning option is 26-gauge prefinished steel. A 24-gauge version is not available for every formed tile product and is not automatically the better selection. Final gauge depends on profile availability, supplier data, support conditions, roof design and project requirements.

Prefinished steel panels use metallic coatings and factory-applied finishes to improve corrosion resistance. Long-term performance depends on coating integrity, compatible materials, drainage, environment, maintenance and installation quality.

Metal tile roofing can provide long-term service, but no universal lifespan applies to every panel or building. Substrate, coating, exposure, fasteners, drainage, installation and maintenance all affect actual performance.
