About the System

Detailed Traditional Profiles Formed in Lightweight Aluminum

Aluminum shingle roofing uses individual or modular formed panels installed in overlapping courses across a sloped roof. Depending on the selected product, the panel edges interlock and the primary fasteners are concealed by the next course or adjoining component.

The system is different from both asphalt shingles and long-panel Standing Seam. It creates a smaller-scale, textured roof appearance while using a non-ferrous metal substrate and profile-specific metal flashings.

The finished shingles are only one part of the assembly. Roof-deck condition, underlayment, starter components, fasteners, valleys, walls, penetrations, hips, ridges, snow management and material compatibility must all be coordinated for the selected product.

Aluminum Roofing Selected for the Home's Architecture

Aluminum roofing is available in different formed profiles, colours, surface textures and product-specific dimensions. Not every profile is available from every manufacturer, and the final product must be confirmed before drawings, quantities, flashings or installation details are finalized.

Traditional Shingle Profiles

Smaller-scale courses and restrained surface texture create a familiar residential shingle appearance while using formed aluminum panels.

Typical applications

Detached homes, residential additions, renovations where a traditional roof appearance is preferred, and simple and moderately complex sloped roofs.

Typical Scope of Work

Slate-Inspired Profiles

Pressed surface patterns and defined shingle edges create an appearance inspired by natural slate without using individual pieces of stone.

Shake- and Tile-Inspired Profiles

Deeper formed textures or curved repeating shapes can reference wood shake or traditional roof tile. Product availability, dimensions and attachment details depend on the selected manufacturer.

Colour, Finish and Product Specification

Factory-applied finishes are available in manufacturer-specific colours and textures. Confirm the exact alloy or substrate, panel dimensions, minimum slope, attachment method, coating, accessories and written warranty terms from the selected product documentation. Do not represent one manufacturer's specification as universal to all aluminum shingles.

Roof Deck and Supporting Conditions

The roof deck and supporting structure must be suitable for the selected system. Complete removal allows the deck to be reviewed before new roofing is installed; overlay projects require a separate qualification process.

Underlayment and Separation Materials

The specified underlayment provides secondary protection and separates the metal roofing from the deck or existing roof materials. Product type and coverage must follow the selected system and project conditions.

Starter and Perimeter Components

Eave starters, gable details and other hidden perimeter components establish the receiving edges for the first courses and are installed before the field shingles.

Valleys and Pre-Shingle Flashings

Valley pans, sidewall components and other underlying water-management details are installed before the shingles that connect to them. Their dimensions and lock-in conditions must match the selected product.

Aluminum Shingles or Modular Panels

The field units are aligned in courses and connected using the product-specific interlocking and fastening method. Layout must account for course exposure, stagger, roof dimensions and transitions.

Compatible Fasteners and Materials

Fasteners, clips, rivets, flashings and accessories must be compatible with the aluminum roofing. Dissimilar metals, copper runoff, certain treated lumber and trapped moisture can create corrosion risks and require product-specific separation or redesign.

Hips, Ridges, Walls and Penetrations

Coordinated caps and custom metalwork complete hips, ridges, gables, wall transitions, chimneys, plumbing vents, skylights and other penetrations after the preparatory details and field shingles are in place.

Snow Retention and Roof Accessories

Snow and ice can release from metal roofs. Compatible snow-retention or accessory systems may be considered above entrances, walkways, driveways and lower roofs. Attachment must follow the aluminum-roofing and accessory manufacturers' requirements.

Traditional and Architectural Profiles

Formed shingles can create appearances inspired by conventional shingles, slate, shake or tile while preserving the smaller-scale pattern preferred on many homes.

Lightweight Metal Substrate

Aluminum is a low-density metal, so formed aluminum roof units are generally lighter than traditional clay, concrete or natural slate roofing. Structural and substrate suitability must still be confirmed for the actual assembly.

No Red Rust Associated with Carbon Steel

Aluminum does not develop the red rust associated with carbon steel. It can still be affected by coating damage, incompatible metals, chemical exposure, trapped moisture or unsuitable fasteners, so material compatibility remains important.

Concealed Primary Attachment on Compatible Products

Sound depends on the complete roof and building assembly. Aluminum roofing installed over a solid deck, underlayment, attic space and insulation behaves differently from bare metal panels installed over an open structure.

Aluminum does not form red rust like carbon steel, but it is not immune to every type of deterioration. Dissimilar metals, copper runoff, unsuitable fasteners, treated lumber, trapped moisture, strong chemicals and coating damage can create problems. Compatible materials and drainage details are essential.
