They remain a widely considered option for sloped residential roofs because they combine familiar appearance, a broad range of profiles and colours, and an accessible initial project cost.

The shingles are only one part of the roof. Long-term performance also depends on the condition of the roof deck, eave and valley protection, underlayment, starter courses, flashings, attic ventilation, ridge caps and correct fastening.

Performance-Specific Options

Availability and suitability must be confirmed for the selected product, roof assembly, location and project requirements. ARKSTRUX does not assign one performance classification to every asphalt shingle roof.

An asphalt shingle roof depends on the coordination of each layer and detail.

Roof Deck

The deck provides the structural surface for the roofing system. During a complete replacement, the exposed deck is reviewed for visible deterioration, loose sections and areas requiring approved repair.

Ice-and-Water Protection

Self-adhered membrane may be installed at eaves, valleys and other vulnerable locations according to the selected assembly, project conditions and applicable requirements.

Roofing Underlayment

Underlayment provides a secondary protective layer beneath the shingles and separates the roof covering from the deck.

Drip Edge and Eave Details

Metal edge components help direct water away from the roof deck and into the drainage system while creating a controlled roof perimeter.

Starter Shingles

Starter courses establish the first sealed edge of the shingle field and support correct alignment and wind performance.

Field Shingles

The primary shingles are installed in overlapping courses using the manufacturer-specified exposure, pattern and fastening location.

Valleys and Flashings

Valleys, walls, chimneys, skylights and other transitions require compatible membrane and metal flashing details installed in the correct sequence.

Ventilation

Intake and exhaust ventilation may form part of the roof and attic assembly. Existing conditions must be reviewed before vents are added, removed or changed.

Hip and Ridge Caps

Compatible cap shingles complete hips and ridges while protecting the upper transitions of the roof.

Selected Repairs

Localized repairs may be considered when the surrounding roof remains serviceable and compatible replacement materials can be obtained.

Asphalt shingles are individual roof-covering units installed in overlapping courses on a sloped roof. A complete system also includes the roof deck, protective membranes, underlayment, starters, flashings, ventilation and ridge details.

Three-tab shingles use a more uniform flat pattern. Architectural or laminated shingles use layered construction and varied tabs to create a more dimensional appearance. Material availability and performance characteristics depend on the selected manufacturer and product.

There is no single lifespan that applies to every shingle roof. Actual service life depends on product selection, roof slope, ventilation, exposure, installation quality, maintenance and the surrounding environment.

The required membrane coverage depends on the roof design, project conditions, selected assembly and applicable requirements. It is commonly considered at eaves, valleys and other vulnerable areas. Full-deck membrane can be included when specified in the project scope.

An overlay may be possible in some conditions, but it limits inspection of the roof deck and may not be suitable for the selected product, existing roof or applicable requirements. ARKSTRUX confirms the installation approach only after reviewing the project conditions.

Ventilation forms part of the roof and attic assembly and can affect heat and moisture management. Existing intake, exhaust and insulation conditions should be considered together rather than changing one vent in isolation.

Cold-weather installation may be limited by temperature, wind, snow, moisture, seal-strip activation and manufacturer requirements. Scheduling and installation methods must be selected for the actual conditions.

Unknown deck repairs are normally not included until the existing roofing is removed and the deck can be inspected. Any required additional work should be documented and approved according to the project agreement.
