Responsibility Boundary

What Shop Drawings Are — and Are Not

Shop drawings describe how the contractor proposes to fabricate and install its scope. They do not replace architectural design, structural engineering, building-envelope consulting, code review or delegated design unless those responsibilities are expressly assigned to qualified parties in the written project documents.

FAQ

Common Questions

No. Architectural drawings communicate the design and project requirements. Shop drawings coordinate how a specific contractor or fabricator proposes to execute its assigned scope.

Preliminary layouts may begin from design documents, but some dimensions may need field verification before fabrication.

The required review path is set by the project documents and may include the contractor, architect, consultant, owner or other responsible party.

The proposal should state the included submission and revision allowance. Redesign caused by changed project information may require additional scope.
